WIP Wednesday - Hexie Edition!

Hexie production has come on leaps and bounds whilst sitting in the garden with my feet in the paddling pool!

I almost have enough for my table runner now.

I read a couple of tutorials on stitching them together and need to ask you hexie experts about which stitch to use.

This picture shows the whip stitch

And this one I think is a ladder stitch

Obviously my ladder stitch looks neater but it takes longer.  Am I not doing the whip stitch right or will it improve with practice?  Which stitch do you all use?

Remember there is still time to enter the Something Old Something New Challenge and be in with a chance of winning this prize

Could it be the needle? I use ones that are very thin and it just catches the very top of the hexies so the thread doesn't show. Whichever one you choose it will be very pretty when done.

I try and do ladder stitch, but invariably get bored and slip into whip stitch, either way, don't stress too much, it will look great. :o)

I love how you're sewing hexies from hexagon fabric - very meta!

The ladder stitch looks very nice, I don't do much hand stitching so I can't really give an opinion. Thanks for sharing.

Love the bee fabric in a hexagon shape :-) Either stitch will work fine, I always just whip stitch. If you take a smaller "bite" of the fabric the thread won't show on the front.

I agree with Marcella, just pick up two or three threads of fabric with your whip stitch. Use a fine polyester thread and a fine needle. I prefer whip stitch as I believe it is sturdier and if a break were to occur, it would be less likely to unravel.

Karen- I love your hexies, and your fabrics are so cool! I despise hand stitching so I can't really offer advice, but I hope you find the answer you're looking for!

Thank you so much for sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!

whipstitch is so much quicker :-) Loving your hexies - you have made quick progress :-)

I agree- use a fine 'straw' needle and fine thread. That should help. And once you have it all together the fabric relaxes somewhat and you won't see the stitches at all.

I'm with the rest, i use a whip stitch, though my stitches are seen on the front... maybe i need to look into getting some finer needles too!
That's going to be one gorgeous table runner!! Awesome work!

Your hexies are coming along wonderfully! I have no idea about the stitching. I'm still too scared to try them myself :0

I use size 10 milliner or straw needles....and I whip stitch. The key is to take the same bite with each stitch. You def get better with practice! I just started Hexies in July and I've gotten real good! The needles made a big difference, I use Bohn brand and could not be happier. Also, I use cotton aurifil thread for my hand stitching. I use the 50wt but 40wt works well too. It is expensive thread but I moly use it for my hand stitching. Give the longer Bohn needles a try.
